Novel ceramic matrix composites with tungsten and molybdenum fiber reinforcement

Ceramic matrix composites usually utilize carbon or ceramic fibers as reinforcements. However, such often expose a low ductility during failure. In this work, we follow the idea of reinforcement concept reinforced by refractory metal to reach pseudo ductile behavior Tungsten and molybdenum were chosen in SiCN manufactured polymer infiltration pyrolysis process. The investigated with respect microstructure, flexural- tensile strength. single fiber strengths for both tungsten compared strength composites. Tensile 206 156 MPa well bending 427 312 achieved W/SiCN Mo/SiCN composites, respectively. W became brittle across entire cross section, while Mo showed superficial, reaction zone but kept on inside.
